Religion in Laos
Religion in Laos consists of several faiths, with the majority adhering to Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism (60%), Phii Worship, Christian and Muslim are the religions in Laos.
60% Theravada Buddhism
This form of Buddhism is rooted in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, emphasizing the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
Monasteries and Temples: Laos is dotted with ornate monasteries and temples, serving as spiritual centers and cultural landmarks. Monks play a central role in the religious life of the country, engaging in meditation, study, and community service.
30% Phii Worship
Animism and spirit worship are integral to Lao culture. Many Laotians hold beliefs in spirits, known as “phii,” which are believed to inhabit natural elements, landscapes, and objects. Animist practices often coexist with Buddhism, influencing daily rituals and ceremonies.
Like the Baci ceremony is a traditional Lao ritual performed for significant life events or celebrations. White strings are tied around a person’s wrist to bind the 32 spirits residing there, symbolizing unity, good fortune, and well-being.
Other religions in Laos
While Buddhism is predominant, Laos is also home to small Christian and Muslim communities, especially among some of the ethnic minority groups. These minority faiths contribute to the religious diversity of the country.

- Boun Ok Phansa: This festival marks the end of Buddhist Lent, with vibrant processions, boat races, and illuminated temples. It is a time for Buddhists to reflect on their spiritual practices and make merit.
