Huay Xai

Ultimate Guide

Travel Laos

Huay Xai, also spelled Houay Xai, is a town in northwestern Laos, situated on the banks of the Mekong River.  It is a key border town. The town is often used as a starting point for the Gibbon Experience and the Slowboat.

Huay Xai is a popular entry point for travelers embarking on the slow boat journey down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. The town itself offers a laid-back atmosphere with a few guesthouses, restaurants, and markets catering to travelers for the slowboat.

The Bokeo Nature Reserve, near Huay Xai, is home to diverse flora and fauna, offering opportunities for eco-friendly adventures. Including the Gibbon Experience

1. The Gibbon Experience

The Gibbon Experience is an eco-tourism initiative. You can explore the Bokeo Nature Reserve through a network of zip-lines and sleep in treehouses. The Gibbon Experience is a popular activity and really a once in a life time experience.

It’s  recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.  I have written a separate page about the Gibbon Experience with all the information you need.

You need to register a day in advance at the office in Huay Xai. Then you can go for your unique experience early the next day.

2. Slowboat

From Huay Xai, you can also easily join the slow boat. This is a two-day boat that takes you further into Laos, namely to the village of Luang Prabang. You will sail along the Mekong River and you will stay one night in Pakbeng to continue the trip the next day.

You can buy the tickets in Huay Xai but you can also arrange them online.

  • 📍 Location: Slowboat Pier
  • ⏱️ Opening hours: Every day 08:00–16:00
  • 💰 Price: vary

✈️ How to get there?

Airplane

The nearest airport is Luang Prabang International Airport. From there, you can take a domestic flight to Houay Xai Airport.

Bus

If you are travelling in northern Thailand, you can easily cross the border. For example, you can take the bus from Chiang Rai to Huay Xai.

Slow Boat

From Luang Prabanag you can choose to take the two day slowboat to arrive in Huay Xai. To start your Gibbon Experience or travel further to Thailand.

🛵 How to get around?

Huay Xai is a really small town. There is actually one street where all the hostels, guesthouses and restaurants are located. Other than that, you can still walk in the surrounding areas to explore the local village.

Where to stay?

My favourite place to stay in Huay Xai is Little Hostel. This hostel is owned by a really kind lady that will help you with everything. You can buy your Sim Card here or book your slowboat ticket. Also can you request your breakfast or lunch packages for the slowboat. In the hostel you can also buy or rent extra essentials you may need for the Gibbon Experience.
