Laos Flag
The flag of Laos features three horizontal stripes, with the middle stripe being twice the width of the outer stripes. The colors used are red, blue, and red from top to bottom. In the center of the blue stripe, there is a white circle that contains a depiction of a stylized white lotus flower.
Design of the flag
The design of the flag reflects various symbolic elements:
- Red Stripes: Represent the blood shed for independence.
- Blue Stripe: Represents the wealth of the nation and the Mekong River.
- White Circle: Represents the moon over the Mekong River, as well as the unity of the people under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
- Lotus Flower: Symbolizes purity, the Buddhist principles followed by the majority of the population, and the idea of enlightenment.
The national flag of Laos was officially adopted on December 2, 1975, when the country became the Lao People’s Democratic Republic after the communist Pathet Lao movement took control. The flag reflects the political ideology, history, and cultural heritage of Laos.
