In tourist areas, some businesses accept US dollars, especially for larger purchases such as accommodation or tours. However, it is advisable to have LAK on hand for smaller transactions, as using US dollars in everyday situations is not so common. It’s advised to pay your visa with US dollars. Make sure they are in good condition. Read more about a visa in Laos.
Credit cards
Although credit cards are increasingly accepted in urban centres and at larger businesses, it is still advisable to carry enough cash, especially if you are travelling to more remote areas where card acceptance may be limited. Also you can expect a surcharge of using a creditcard.
ATMs
ATMs are available in major cities and also villages. You will need them for your cash withdrawals. From my experience, ATMs are limited in remote areas. Also, the ATMs sometimes may not always work. Due to breakdowns or other problems. Keep this in mind and make sure you always have cash. Also keep in mind that your card may not work in some ATM’s. Not all ATMs support your credit card.
