Best travel time Laos
Many countries in Asia have a climate with a rainy season and a dry season. Laos is no exception, so it is important to be aware of this and take it into account. Additionally, there is the Burning Season, which is also in North Thailand. This is a very old technique used by farmers to fertilize their land. They burn the leftover crops and other materials in the fields to fertilize the soil. It pollutes the air and reduces views during hikes and other activities.
Rainy Season
May- October
In May, the monsoon season arrives in Laos and lasts until October. This doesn’t mean it rains all day long. Often, there are short but intense showers. It’s more likely that rivers overflow in the rainy season. It’s also more likely that roads could be flooded. The roads are already not in the best condition, and during this period, they are even worse. Therefore, expect additional travel time if you visit Laos in these months. Despite that, you will still have a great time. And additional advantage of the rainy season is that nature is at its most beautiful during these months, especially the rice fields and what about the waterfalls? They would be so impressive!
Burning Season
March – April
The Burning Season slowly begins at the end of February. The first farmers start setting fire to their leftover crops and other materials. Gradually, it becomes more widespread. The air becomes polluted with smoke from the fires, disrupting the views at lookout points. You may even experience breathing issues from inhaling this smoke. The peak will be in March and April. It will not provide you with the optimal travel experience in Laos. Try to avoid this period.
Dry Season
November – May
The dry season in Laos begins in November and lasts until May, with occasional sporadic rain showers. During these months, there is generally less rainfall. The warmest months of the year are March and April. These months are also known for the Burning Season. As you have read above, you would prefer to avoid this period. Especially in the southern part of Laos, it can become extremely hot during this period.
Best travel time
The conclusion of the above is that the best time to travel to Laos is from November to February. Each season has its own advantages. For instance, the rainy season brings extra lush and beautiful greenery. It’s fine to visit Laos during this period, but be prepared for occasional heavy rain showers. However, I would recommend trying to avoid the months during the Burning Season. The air quality significantly deteriorates, posing a real disadvantage to both your travel experience and health.
